Given how close the end of January was to the end of the week, I figured my January update could wait until tonight. Haven't necessarily done a lot of actual writing, but it's been a week of feeling pretty positive about writing. Stats and thoughts below!

Week update (27 Jan - 2 Feb)

A few days here where I was clearly just aiming for the "anything at all is better than nothing", but that's the whole point of the endeavour I guess. I also posted my first thing (in 8 dang years wtf) which took some work that wasn't necessarily words I could count (and some time, jfc formatting that on AO3 was a nightmare for some reason).

Still only have three writing spots filled (short fic, long fic, original fic) because I haven't replace the other thing I finished. That's fine with me. I did touch everything I have active this week - though hopefully this coming week I'll get on to that earlier in the week so I don't have to do a Sunday rush (having said that I do have two assignments due this week and a bunch of work so who the fuck knows.

Month update (January)

I've made it through the first month! I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this, but first the details

[took the table out bc it was super broken, will add it back in when I have time]
  • daily writing: other than 1 + 3 January (from memory I intentionally gave myself 1 Jan off and just plain forgot on 3 Jan) I have managed to write some words every single day - I've just hit a 30 day streak.
  • monthly posting: success! Chapter One of Would You Do Me the Honour (fake marriage!au) is now up on AO3. I even have February's thing ready to go (well, just about), though I'm hoping to get a second chapter of fake marriage!au up this month also
  • active projects: this has worked well. I have stuck to what I have running, and have managed to touch every active project at least once a week. I have one empty spot currently - at the moment this is enough for me, but once things ease up study/work-wise that might change.
  • planning: I picked out and finished Derek Hale Deserves Nice Things, and once that was done, made a strategic decision about what to focus on next.
Thoughts

Both November and January have been really significant months in terms of writing, in very different ways. November was all about quantity, aiming for a big goal and actually getting there, getting over myself and letting terrible writing be terrible, so long as it was on the page. It was not as frantic an experience as I had expected, but it certainly wasn't something I could keep up for an extended period of time. At least at this stage.

January on the other hand has been less about quantity and more about consistency. Some nights I remember I have writing to do write before bed, and sit down with the intention of spewing out a few words, and end up with 500 odd. Other days it's 23 words, but that's still meeting my goal - if not my unrealistic expectations. Realising that I can write on google docs on my phone has also been a game changer. I can't write as much, or as fast as I can on my laptop, but it's another barrier I can take down. Half asleep? Can't be effed getting out of bed and waiting for the cranky computer to wake up? Phone. Words. Done.

This month has seen me finish two pieces. Well, one, I guess. I'd actually finished chapter one of fake marriage!au months ago, but this month I handed it over to my partner for editing and then posted it. I also finished Derek Hale Deserves Nice Things and while that hasn't been posted yet, it has been read and edited by my partner and here's the wild thing - other people think they're good! It's been a much needed boost and motivator.

January was never going to be a month where I got A Lot of writing done. I'm not barely managing to keep up with study and work, so lots of writing was never on the cards. I haven't even had the brain space to think about stuff in fics to be honest. Despite that, by setting myself a really low, painfully achievable bar, I've managed to get a surprising amount done.

February is hopefully going to be more conducive to writing. I'm hoping to up the old word count, churn out a few more things and even post here more often, but if not, I've got a solid base to stand on. I'm taking this progress with me to see what I can do with it, given another month. What have you done this month? How have you surprised yourself? It doesn't have to be 'productive', it doesn't have to involve reaching or working towards a goal. It can be personal, fannish, professional, whatever - what are you carrying with you to build on in February?
